Achieving net zero by 2045… Hyundai Mobis publishes 'Carbon Neutral Report' for the first time

Hyundai Mobis announced on the 10th that it has published the '2045 Carbon Neutral Report', which contains major strategies and detailed plans for achieving carbon neutrality in 2045. This report is a milestone for Hyundai Mobis to achieve carbon neutrality. This report was first published with the purpose of transparently disclosing systematic and feasible carbon-neutral initiatives to various stakeholders including employees, customers, investors, and local communities.

Kim Young-bin, head of the planning division at Hyundai Mobis, said, “The ability to respond to climate crises and a carbon-neutral sustainable management system are essential to determine the future competitiveness of the company. said.

Hyundai Mobis joined the 'Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)' for the first time in the domestic automobile industry in October last year. Accordingly, the GHG reduction target will be verified by next year. According to the report published this time, Hyundai Mobis has set the goal of achieving carbon neutrality in the final sense throughout the entire value chain, including not only the carbon emitted from domestic and overseas business sites, but also the supply chain, products, and local communities by 2045. It is explained that the reliability of this report has been greatly improved by including the greenhouse gas management system and plan in the indirect emission area, which is difficult to manage outside the workplace, in this report.

To realize the carbon-neutral goal, Hyundai Mobis plans to convert 100% of the electricity used at all domestic and overseas business sites to renewable energy by 2040. To achieve the RE100 goal, Hyundai Mobis launched the RE100 Implementation Team, which consists of 130 people in charge of environmental and energy management, at 100 domestic and overseas bases in August last year. RE100 is a global campaign to convert 100% of electricity consumed by businesses to renewable energy. Hyundai Mobis completed its RE100 subscription last April.

Hyundai Mobis published the 2022 Sustainability Report along with the 2045 Carbon Neutral Report. This year's Sustainability Report contains the core contents of the Carbon Neutral Report, as well as Hyundai Mobis' environmental management vision and strategy, and examples of major activities. According to this sustainability report, Hyundai Mobis acquired about 1,000 related patents and international certifications in future technologies such as autonomous driving, eco-friendliness, and connectivity last year. Of these, about 30% are new patents related to eco-friendly technologies. This year, it plans to invest a total of 958.6 billion won in the development and production of eco-friendly technologies and products. This is more than double the size of last year (401.4 billion won). Hyundai Mobis mass-produces drive systems, battery systems, fuel cell systems, and power conversion systems for hybrid, electric vehicles, and hydrogen cars, and supplies them to finished vehicles.

Examples of major activities for realizing a circular economy were also introduced in this sustainability report. Hyundai Mobis subdivides and manages the source of generation to reduce the use of raw and subsidiary materials and minimize the generation of waste throughout the entire production process. Hyundai Mobis' Changwon plant was recognized as a 'zero waste landfill' business site in June for the first time in the domestic automobile industry. Hyundai Mobis plans to pursue zero waste landfill at all domestic and overseas business sites by 2030 by continuously improving the waste recycling rate.

Meanwhile, Hyundai Mobis plans to use the Carbon Neutral Report and Sustainability Report to respond to the carbon neutrality demands of various internal and external stakeholders and ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) evaluations. In addition, external communication will be strengthened so that the status and performance of implementation by stage and period can be transparently disclosed.
